The procedure of abdominoplasty is beneficial for those patients who have an excess of skin in addition to fat and/or a laxity of the abdominal musculature either from an innate congenital weakness, abdominal surgery or pregnancy.

The classic procedure entails tightening the musculature as well as removing the extra skin and fat.

In the case where muscle tightening is involved, there are occasions when insurance will pay for this portion of the procedure.

Generally, this is an outpatient procedure done with a general anesthetic. Depending upon the extent of the procedure, it may require an overnight hospital stay.

Recovery requires avoidance of lifting or strenuous exercise, the procedure may involve a fairly extensive incision across the lower abdomen in the hair line extending toward the hips.

The procedure of liposuction is currently the most popular of all the cosmetic procedures done in this country.

This is an outpatient procedure which can be done either with a general anesthetic or with local anesthesia and sedation, depending upon the number of sites and the extent of the surgery indicated.

The procedure was developed approximately twenty years ago and has been steadily refined through the years.

The primary benefits of the surgery are that it provides an effective method of  contouring various sites on the body, while the incision or incisions are extremely small and almost never problematic or visible.

Depending again upon the site or sites being treated, return to work can be quite rapid and return to a full daily routine including exercise can be within a matter of days or a few short weeks.

For optimal results, the patient is required to wear a support garment for several weeks after surgery. However, this is usually quite nicely concealed under regular street clothes.

Prices for the surgery are determined primarily by the time entailed which is, in itself, determined by the number of surgical sites to be treated.
